I am taking a vacation from politics

April 1st, 2008 by Ellen

I am not enjoying this campaign cycle.  I am not looking forward to November.  I have actually been surly and a bit short-tempered lately, as a direct result, which is–one likes to think–somewhat out of character.  So, it’s clearly time for a break.

Lucky for me, the Beloved Team can fill the breach!  After the long trip to Japan, the bizarre exhibition games in Los Angeles, and now, games in Oakland and Toronto, I expect the team to be somewhat sluggish out of the gate, but it’s a long season, and many days and nights of fun await one and all.  Recently, I happened to be talking to a Yankees fan (the team also known as The Evil Ones) on the street and was able to say, very kindly, something to the effect of “You all have a nice, little team.  Perhaps one of these years, you will be able to win a pennant again.”  Frankly, it made my day.  Possibly my century.

I saw Stop-Loss, and recommend it, but without wild enthusiasm.  It’s certainly not a great movie–and it might not even be a good one, but it’s a strong, and probably unnecessary, reminder that the situation in Iraq is an absolute disaster, and is almost certainly going to continue to be so for many, many years.  And Joseph Gordon-Levitt has–somewhat to my surprise, since I mostly just associate him with the fluffy, if fun, Third Rock from the Sun–become quite an interesting actor.

For anyone who hasn’t already heard that Joss Whedon has a new show coming out, starring Eliza Dushku, the plot sounds intriguing and I have already begun my official countdown, as I wait for the first episode to air. Ever since Ms. Dushku first swaggered onto the screen as Faith, I’ve been a fan, and am curious to see whether she really does have the untapped range I suspect lurks somewhere inside.

I enjoyed a Del’s Lemonade over the weekend.  It was from a mix, I think, and so, lacked the pieces of fresh lemon a sensible person prefers–but, I was still delighted to drink it.

And life is good when you get to have a traditional New England supper on a Saturday night.  Ours included home-made cole-slaw, with no mayonnaise, of course–since it is well-known among my people that the substance almost always dooms your salad to utter mediocrity.

Yesterday, a pal alerted me to the fact that Drugs are probably Bad.  Be warned!

Perhaps this will cheer you up a little:

I, too, am looking forward to Joss’s new show (but I admit to a bit of trepidation, too; the premise has the potential for so many, many ugly wrong turns).

  2. Ellen Says:

Well, it looks as though Aud would do pretty damn well with her ruling–I mean, governing.

Farm subsidies pretty much suck, I think.

Apparently, the male lead in the Whedon show is going to be Helo?! I’m not sure he’s a strong enough actor, but we shall see.

  3. Barbara Says:

Helo’s pretty. And very tall. And incidentally, very, very gay. If the character’s a little less whiney than Helo, I’m sure he’ll be awesome.

  4. Ellen Says:

Do not even consider telling me that Michael Trucco is gay.

  5. Barbara Says:

Tallulah Bankhead had a lovely response to a similar question but since this is a public forum, let’s just…I have never heard that he is.

  6. Marsha Says:

Well…I am a bit concerned. If you take a vacation from politics, where am I going to get my weekly dose of political commentary? I mean, geesh, will I have to depend on “Meet the Press” and/or “Face the Nation” when I’d rather hear your take on the events of the week!

  7. Ellen Says:

I am so surly about it all, though, that I am just No Fun right now.

And Barb, I agree that you should censor yourself, in order to protect your future political viability.

  8. Carpaz Says:

Fox shut down the singalongs? Damn Fox!

  9. Marsha Says:

You may be No Fun now, but you are more entertaining than Chris Matthews or Tim Russart!

  10. Meg Says:

I *do* have to point out that, given the date of this entry, I was hoping it’d be revealed as an April Fool’s joke entry, but since it has been over a week and I see you haven’t posted a “fooled ya” entry, I’m assuming you’re serious, which makes me sad. I think being politically cranky right now is rather justified, and I do value your political commentary as it is generally quite spot on, surly or not.

  11. Ellen Says:

After upsetting someone with an April Fool’s joke many years ago, I have never played any sort of prank on anyone since. (Which is why, sadly, George Clooney and I could probably never have gotten married.)

So, yeah, for the moment, I am completely serious. I just don’t feel as though I have anything to say which would advance the current discussion/climate right now, and I’m leery of being destructive.

I do have a rather sweet blog in mind–when I have the energy to write it–but, I don’t think it will touch on politics at all.

  12. Ellen Says:

Actually, that is untrue–I played a few gentle jokes on the beloved shepherd I had for almost 15 years, but they amused him. My current dog is, for the most part, much too delicate and sensitive for such treatment, although she likes it when I suddenly stop short on the way down the hall, causing her to stop in confusion and wonder what we’re going to do next–or when I dart into the apartment, but leave her on the other side of the door for a few seconds, before letting her in and giving her several biscuits. It’s a childish game, but it pleases both of us.
