Rhode Island is a swell place

March 4th, 2008 by Ellen

It is a small state, but a delightful one–where, as it happens, I grew up.

Rhode Island makes the best lemonade in the world.

We enjoy tasty treats like coffee milk and johnnycakes. And if you are homesick, you can always order delicacies from the Ocean State, or attempt to prepare them yourself.

There are great beaches–and if you are peculiar enough to enjoy seafood, there are many fine spots to sample local traditions like clam cakes. (I do not care for them, but I am very much in the minority. The restaurants are nifty, in any case.)

You can get an excellent education, even though you may speak with an odd accent. Regardless, we tend to be a happy group of people, because things like this make us laugh our heads off.

Proms are held at fun places.

It is possible to watch the Baby Red Sox for less than ten dollars a ticket.

I learned how to ski in Rhode Island.

The mayor of Providence was my pal in high school. I hope he runs for governor, during the next election cycle–and have no doubt that he would win.

I love the way the state votes!

You had your prom at the Astors’ Beechwood? Were there reenactors?

    What about cabinets?

  2. Carpaz Says:

Hmmm, I don’t want to be contrary, but boston.com has an odd definition of “narrow.” :)

  3. Ellen Says:

Didn’t see the “narrow” definition, but I will take your word for it.

Yes, my prom was there. No re-enactors, lucky for us. Lots of other RI high schools were having proms that night, and we prom-hopped at various mansions. Very fun.

I can’t believe you haven’t yet been bashed by the Obama corps…It’s rather daring of you to continue along this line, however tamely. Do you think maybe they’re a little dispirited today to deal with the likes of crazy whack-job liberal bloggers?

  5. Carpaz Says:

Wow, that sounds amazing. I think that’s one of the prettiest spots anywhere even without the mansions–the water, the air, the light are all pretty spectacular.

Um, yes, they said “narrow, but key” referring specifically to the one place…uh, I think Barbara is right, I don’t want to get you in too much trouble here.

  6. Ellen Says:

I thought I was being immensely clever, by pounding Obama–without actually ever mentioning his name.

I plan to write a “The Emperor Has Very Few Clothes” post soon, though, so……

  7. Carpaz Says:

I was amused, but trepidatious. Fundamentally, though, Rhode Island IS undeniably a swell place.

Well…Ohio was a pretty swell place to be this week, too! He-who-isn’t-being-named pretty much ignored the rural part of the state. Farmers can be a prickly bunch when you ignore them…

  9. Ellen Says:

I’m delighted by Ohio! And the non-caucus version of Texas.
